Habitat for Humanity
Shelter from wind, rain and cold is a basic human need.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, non-denominational Christian organization. Dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide, this organization is commited to providing affordable shelter as a matter of conscience and action. The ministry was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent place to live in dignity and safety.Westwood has worked with the local Habitat for Humanity for a number of years. Partnering with another local church, one project included building a side by side duplex home on State Street in Cincinnati, Ohio that accomodated two families. Led by John Bennet and Mitch Smith, volunteers pitched in to provide refreshments, expertise, and an amazing amount of labor.
A three bedroom ranch on Savannah Street in North College Hill became home to three sons and their single mom. Taking about four months to complete, volunteers included Glen Schulte, Kary Bottoms, Ray McMullen Don Clark, Duncan Cordrey Gordon Hone, Bob Christman, Tim and Jan Peters, the Westwood Youth Group and many many more. Neighbors provided electiric and water and the whole family turned out to help including mom, her sons, aunts, uncles and cousins.
