Licensing
Westwood United Methodist Church Nursery School is not only licensed by the State, but by the Cincinnati Board of Health with a Food Service License; and therefore, meets its more stringent health, safety and educational requirements, e.g. lower staff: child ratios & strict requirements for food served. For comparison with other preschools, our Tuition includes: all enrichment programs, all supplies, snacks, college certified staff.
Our Staff
Our highly rated program depends on the excellent qualifications of our staff. When selecting teachers, we require that they have a college degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education, or a related field. Experience working with young children and a warm, caring personality are also required. Click here for more information.
Philosophy
At Westwood United Methodist Church Preschool we are aware that a child's capacity to learn is at its greatest during the pre-elementary school years. A positive first school experience provides fundamental mental, social, physical, and moral skills, and a receptive attitude to learning opportunities in the future. Less obvious, but even more important, is the development of healthy feelings that establish a postitive self-image. We feel that this is best nurtured in the caring, Christian atmosphere that you will notice when you visit our school.
The child's hours are well planned within a daily routine flexible enough to meet individual needs and situations. Special activities are planned on a regular basis: i.e. art, music, Chapel, drama, Spanish, gymnastics, and field trips to a farm and to a Retirement Home, and guests including a dentist, a nurse, musicians, Imago, The Zoo, and the Museum Center. Be assured that all of the Ohio Dept. of Education Early Learning Content Standards are being taught. Your child will be well prepared for the KRA-L (Kindergarten Readiness Assessment-Literacy)
Goals
During free play, children play in learning centers: housekeeping corner, block corner, art area. Weekly, they may play in the water table, sand box, and with play dough. The aim of this play is to teach decision-making, sharing in co-operative play, developing foot muscle coordination and cognitive understanding... and having fun!
Free play time includes accomplishing assigned daily duties, such as updating the calendar and weather charts and watering the plants, which instill in the child a sense of responsibility and the self esteem of accomplishment.
Group time develops verbal and musical skills as well as the child's attention span. The children talk about a theme each week, such as the seasons, families, holidays, and shapes. They also learn manners such as taking turns during conversation.
Wash up and snack time stress basic hygiene and cleanliness and polite table manners. Once again, the children participate in the responsibilities by helping serve and clean up the snack.
Quiet time with music and/or a story expands the theme of the week through the use of other media, and further develops the child's attention span.
Art time introduces the child to a variety of media including paint, chalk, scissors, glue, clay, shaving cream, etc.
Outdoor activity is provided to channel the children's high energy into play which exercises their large muscles and develops coordination. We have outdoor play equipment which includes tricycles, Big Wheels, scooters, slides and a climber. In bad weather, the gym facilities are available for playing with balls, hula hoops, marching band instruments, etc.
